The OS X update to El Capitan only builds off the current OS X Yosemite. There are some neat features that are coming to help you do your work more efficiently.
1. Split Screen - There will be a feature that allows you to fill your screen with two apps of your choice. How awesome will it be to have Power School and a document you are grading open at the same time?! Talk about time saving. And there will be no resizing and dragging windows around.
2. Mission Control - Currently on the MacBook, if you swipe up with three fingers, you will be able to see all apps or browser windows that are currently opened. Often, items can become hidden and hard to see because they can be stacked. With the OS X El Captian update, it will place all of the windows in a single screen making it easier to find what you are looking for.
3. Find your cursor - Our cursor can seem so small at times (especially after a long day). By shaking your finger back and forth on the track pad, the cursor will become bigger! No more searching for the missing cursor!
4. Spotlight Searching - If you are not using the little magnifying glass in the upper-right hand corner of your screen, now is the time to start. There are more features coming out with OS X El Capitan, including being able to access a smarter search. It will find weather updates and more right in the spotlight results. And similar to Google, you can type something just as you would say it. It's time to start using Command + Space bar!
5. Notes - The notes app is something I use to keep track of my current to do's. But it sounds like the new update will have the possibility to turn the "to do's" into a check list. And with iCloud, you can create the list on your computer and have it conveniently sync to your iPhone.
6. Safari browsing - My current browser of choice is Google Chrome. The new OS X El Capitan update has many features which are currently reasons I love Chrome. For instance, the update will release Pinned Sites, which tells Safari to open certain tabs every time the browser is launched. I love this feature since I am constantly opening Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar. Keeping them pinned takes away one less step of opening it myself.
Another neat feature that Chrome does not have is the ability to AirPlay. The OS X update will give users an AirPlay icon on compatible videos, letting only the video to be shared and not the full screen.
7. Speed - There will be faster app launch, faster app switching, faster display of email and faster PDF preview.
There are a few more improvements made with the update, including Maps, Fonts and Photos, but I felt the ones above had the greatest impact on the education profession.
